What the future looks like
We are looking to create a vibrant place for people to work, shop and live. The re-development of The Square Shopping Centre will not only modernise the existing shopping centre but also look to re-build in part. Planning consent was secured in March 2019 for a scheme designed by Simpson Haugh architects. Our vision includes 202 high quality residential units, full office refurbishment of Springfield House, leisure space and a new 340 space multi-storey car park.
The new look and feel of The Square has been designed to bring life to the town centre at all times of the day with a particular focus on creating a night time economy. Accessibility is a key part in achieving the success of the Centres future; opening up the scheme from the South and linking School Road through to Sibson Road means we are open and connected to the community creating a walk-through at any time of day. The design embraces the need for better public realm within the town centre and includes the provision of a new south facing square as well as a comprehensive overhaul of the existing Town Square, creating a destination in its own right.
We will work with existing occupiers and look to create a diverse mix of retail, adding something different to what is currently on offer. We envisage strong independent traders at ground floor as well as alternative users at first floor level. Refurbishment of the existing Mall to create fresh new retail units framed by traditional & individual shop fronts as well as streetscape activation and the introduction of greenery to create an attractive High Street environment will complete the vision.
And in terms of what is happening now… we are bringing new and exciting uses through our pop-up initiative along the East mall to generate more activity, curiosity and stimulate further interest in the retail offer. We want to hear from you if you have an idea of how you would like to see the retail space used or indeed you want to bring your own concept forward.
